Banana

Usually introduced around 6 months

2 key nutrients

Choking notes

Whole banana coins can block the airway. Always halve or quarter coins until ~18 months.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Peel and serve. The sticky texture can stick to the roof of the mouth, so watch for gagging.

Cut:

Half a peeled banana, or lengthwise spears split into thirds. Mash and pre-load on a spoon if preferred.

9-12 months

Prep:

Peel and serve plain, or stir into yogurt, oatmeal, or porridge. Smaller pieces are less slippery.

Cut:

Lengthwise spears in thirds, or smaller bite-sized pieces broken off. Slices help with pincer practice.

12-18 months

Prep:

Peel and serve. Around 18 months, hand over an unpeeled banana to practice peeling on their own.

Cut:

Bite-sized pieces, spears, or a whole banana, depending on your child's eating skills.
