Choking notes

Whole and round-halved grapes are among the leading causes of choking deaths in young children. Always quarter lengthwise until at least age 4.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook until burst or blend into a sauce. Raw grapes are too round and slippery for this age.

Cut:

Cooked and burst, or blended smooth.

9-12 months

Prep:

Choose large oblong grapes over small round ones. Quarter lengthwise from stem to bottom.

Cut:

Quartered lengthwise from stem to bottom.

12-18 months

Prep:

Halve lengthwise once your toddler picks up smaller pieces well. Quartered is also fine.

Cut:

Halved lengthwise, or quartered.

2 years and up

Prep:

Keep halving or quartering through age 4. Whole grapes work only with mature chewing skills, sat at the table.

Cut:

Halved or quartered until age 4.
