Hummus

Usually introduced around 6 months

Contains Sesame5 key nutrients

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Make sure sesame (from tahini) has been introduced first since it is a top-9 allergen. Store-bought or homemade work; smooth or textured both fine.

Cut:

Serve plain in a bowl for hand scooping, or spread thinly on a strip of lightly toasted pita, a food teether, or another age-appropriate base.

9-12 months

Prep:

Chickpeas are high in fiber and may temporarily increase gas as digestion adjusts; this is normal. Continue watching for sesame and any add-in allergens.

Cut:

Continue serving in a small bowl for hand scooping or pre-load a spoon. Spread on toast strips, pancakes, or vegetables to add variety to a meal.

12-18 months

Prep:

Explore different flavor varieties. Continue watching for allergic reactions, especially if a new ingredient (red pepper, beet, herbs) is in the mix.

Cut:

Serve as desired: in a bowl for scooping, spread onto other foods, or as a dip. Toddlers can usually dip their own foods at this stage.
