4 key nutrients

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook in liquid until soft and scoopable. The texture doesn't need to be perfectly smooth. Whole lentils should still be soft enough to mash.

Cut:

Cooked red lentils mixed into scoopable dishes like dal or khichdi, or formed into large soft burgers or patties.

9-12 months

Prep:

Continue cooking lentils until very soft. They are not a top-9 allergen in the US, but legume allergy is possible in some regions.

Cut:

Bite-sized pieces of lentil burgers or patties, lentil pasta, or lentils stirred into soft grains and mashed vegetables.

12-18 months

Prep:

Standard adult-style preparation works once chewing is steady. Keep usual choking-prevention basics in place at meals.

Cut:

Cooked lentils in everyday meals, eaten with hands or with an age-appropriate utensil. No special texture changes needed.
