Choking notes

Whole round peas can pocket in the airway. Smash or halve until pincer grasp is confident.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook peas until very soft. Lightly smash to break the skin so the round shape does not pose a choking risk. Mix into other foods or serve halved.

Cut:

Smashed and mixed in, or halved.

9-12 months

Prep:

Whole cooked peas are appropriate once pincer grasp is solid. Keep them soft enough to crush between your fingers, and stay close while baby eats.

Cut:

Whole or halved, baby''s preference.

12-18 months

Prep:

Any form: soup, fritters, mashed into pasta. Whole cooked peas are fine with active supervision; never serve dried, raw, or hard.

Cut:

As served, soft and supervised.

2 years and up

Prep:

Whole cooked peas are fine with supervision. Continue to avoid raw, dried, or hard peas; small round foods remain a documented choking risk through preschool age.
