Rice

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Mash with a fork or add liquid so grains stick. Avoid mochi, tteok, nian gao, and steamed rice cakes (springy texture is a choking risk).

Cut:

Mix cooked rice into a sauce, broth, or congee, or form a large soft ball that holds together. Loose grains can scatter and trigger gagging.

9-12 months

Prep:

Flatten grains with a fork so they cling together for easier pickup. Rotate with oat or multigrain options to limit arsenic exposure from rice.

Cut:

Offer moist rice plain or rolled into balls, or shape into patties such as arancini, onigiri, or sticky rice cakes that hold together in the hand.

12-18 months

Prep:

Make rice slightly stickier and moister for utensil success. Steamed rice cakes (mochi, tteok, nian gao) remain a serious choking hazard at this age.

Cut:

Serve rice as desired and pre-load a fork or trainer chopsticks. Hand feeding is still common at this age, especially for sticky or moist preparations.
