Watermelon

Usually introduced around 6 months

2 key nutrients

Prep warning

Remove all black seeds and any hard white rind before serving.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Remove all seeds. Wash and scrub the rind well, then pat dry. Mixed liquid and solid texture often causes coughing or gagging, that is normal.

Cut:

A large piece of rind with most of the flesh trimmed off as a food teether, or rectangular sticks about the width of two fingers and as thick as one.

9-12 months

Prep:

Same seed-removal and rind-washing routine. Some babies bite through the rind by now, stay calm and let baby work the piece out.

Cut:

Sticks the size of two fingers together, or small bite-sized pieces. Serving on the rind can keep babies from overloading the mouth.

12-18 months

Prep:

Remove seeds and wash the rind well. The rind can be a choking hazard, trim some off if your child bites large pieces. Frozen watermelon puree is great for teething.

Cut:

Small bite-sized pieces or classic triangular pieces with the rind on. The rind is edible.

Key nutrients

Vitamin CVitamin A
